In a significant anti-corruption action, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested two Central GST officials in Gujarat’s Nadiad for allegedly demanding a ₹55 lakh bribe to release a seized transport vehicle.
The accused have been identified as Amarnath Govardhanram Saroj, a Class-2 Superintendent, and Subodh Subhash Chauhan, a Class-2 GST Inspector, both posted at the Central GST Bhavan in Nadiad.
Background of the Case
According to the report, a transporter’s goods-laden truck was intercepted and seized by GST authorities and brought to the Nadiad GST office for inspection.
When the transporter approached the officials for release of the vehicle, the officers allegedly pointed out “deficiencies” in GST documentation and demanded a bribe of ₹55 lakh to settle the matter without further legal action. An initial instalment of ₹10 lakh was reportedly insisted upon.
ACB Trap and Arrest
Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant contacted the ACB through its helpline.
A trap was subsequently laid by the Gandhinagar unit of the ACB. During the operation:
- The exchange took place inside the Central GST office in Nadiad
- A recorded conversation reportedly confirmed the bribe demand
- The officials were caught red-handed while accepting ₹10 lakh in cash
- The entire amount was recovered from the office premises
The operation was led by PI D.A. Chaudhary, following which both officers were arrested on the spot.
Legal Action and Investigation
The accused have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for criminal misconduct.
The ACB is also examining whether the case is part of a larger pattern, including the possibility of an extortion network targeting transporters.
Conclusion
The case highlights enforcement action against corruption within tax administration and underscores the importance of reporting such incidents through proper channels.
